Those Last Application Pieces That Always Trip People Up

Those Last Application Pieces That Always Trip People Up

December hits different when Regular Decision deadlines sit just weeks away. You've poured time into essays and forms, but the supporting materials often get overlooked until something goes wrong.

Transcripts Need Real Tracking

High schools send transcripts through different systems, and delays happen every year. One student I know waited until December 20 to request theirs only to learn the office was closed for break until after January 1.

Call your counseling office directly. Ask exactly how they send materials to Common App schools and confirm the date they will process requests. Some schools charge fees or require signed forms that you cannot handle online.

Keep a simple list of every college and the date you requested the transcript. Do not assume the request went through without checking the portal status.

Test Scores Create Their Own Headaches

Even at test-optional schools, some programs still want official scores. Sending them late can hold up your full application review.

Log into College Board or ACT accounts now. Check where scores were sent last and add any missing colleges before the rush hits. Processing times stretch during peak weeks, so do this before Christmas if possible.

If you decided against sending scores, double-check each school's policy again. Requirements sometimes change between Early and Regular rounds.

Recommenders Often Forget Deadlines

Teachers and counselors juggle dozens of requests. A quick reminder in early December keeps your letters on track without sounding pushy.

Send a short email that includes the college list and exact deadlines. Mention whether the school uses the Common App recommender system or needs separate uploads.

If someone has not started yet, offer to meet briefly to refresh their memory on your projects or classes. This small step prevents last-minute scrambles.

One More Submission Sweep

After you hit submit on the main application, the work is not finished. Check each college portal for any extra forms or fee waivers that still need attention.

Some schools require a mid-year report or additional writing samples only after the initial deadline passes. Missing those can affect your chances even if the main pieces arrived on time.

I built DeadlineKeeper partly because tracking these scattered requirements manually gets messy fast. A quick scan of your list each week catches issues before they become problems.

When Something Still Goes Wrong

Admissions offices understand that mail gets lost and systems glitch. Contact them directly through the portal or email if a required item shows as missing after you submitted everything on your end.

Keep records of every request confirmation and email. These details help when you need to explain a delay.

The goal is not perfection. It is making sure the pieces you control actually reach the right places before January arrives.

Ready to track your deadlines?

Stop stressing about missed deadlines. Let Keeper handle the tracking so you can focus on your applications.
